What a Whole-House Water Filter Does
A whole-house filter, sometimes called a point-of-entry system, sits on the main water line where it enters your home. Everything downstream gets filtered water: showers, bathroom sinks, the washing machine and the kitchen.
Homeowners usually call us about whole-house water filtration for a few reasons:
- A chlorine taste or smell in city water
- Sand, grit or sediment that clogs aerators and showerheads
- Staining or cloudy water from a private well
- Wanting cleaner water for bathing, not just drinking
- Protecting fixtures and appliances from grit
Whole-House Filter Options
There isn’t one best filter. The right choice depends on your water, which is why we look at it before we recommend anything.
Sediment Filters
Sediment filters catch sand, rust flakes and grit. They’re a common first stage, especially on wells and in homes with older lines, and they protect any equipment installed after them.
Carbon Filters
Carbon filters reduce chlorine taste and odor, along with many other compounds that affect taste. They’re the most common choice for homes on city water.
Specialty Filters for Well Water
Well water can carry iron, sulfur or other problems that stain fixtures or smell. Specialty media can target those issues. On wells, filtration is often paired with UV disinfection, which we cover on our water treatment page.
Whole-House Water Filtration Installation
A good install matters as much as the filter. We place the system on the main line after the shut-off valve and add a bypass so you can change filters or service the unit without losing water to the house. We size it so it doesn’t choke your water pressure, and we test every connection for leaks.
Many Sacramento-area homes have the main line coming up outside. When the filter has to go outdoors, we plan for our hot summer sun so the housings and cartridges hold up. If you also have hard water, the filter usually goes ahead of a water softener so it protects the softener’s resin from sediment and chlorine.
If we find the main line itself is old or leaking while we’re there, we’ll let you know and can handle the water line repair at the same visit.
Keeping Your Filter Working
Every filter needs care. Cartridges fill up over time, and a clogged cartridge slowly drops your water pressure. We show you how to change them and how often to plan for it based on your water and usage. Some media tanks backwash themselves and need very little attention.
Our process is the same on every job: we come out, give you a free estimate on site, get your approval, install the system, test everything and close you out. Most new installs carry a one-year warranty on leaks and labor, and you can qualify for financing right from your estimate.
