What Is Hydro Jetting?
A hydro jetter pushes water through a hose and a special nozzle at very high pressure. Jets on the back of the nozzle pull it forward through the pipe, while jets on the front break up the blockage. As it moves, the spray scrubs the full inside wall of the pipe.
The result is a line cleaned back close to its full width. What comes loose washes downstream and out of the system. No chemicals are involved, just water.
When Hydro Jetting Beats Snaking
A cable machine, or snake, is the right tool for many clogs. It bores through the blockage and gets water moving again. But it leaves buildup stuck to the pipe walls, and that buildup catches the next clog. Hydro jetting is the better choice when:
- The same drain or main line clogs every few months
- Grease has built up in a kitchen line over the years
- Roots have grown into the sewer line and need to be cut and flushed out
- Sand, silt or scale has narrowed the pipe
- A business, like a restaurant, sends a lot of grease and food waste down the drains
Grease and Root Buildup
Grease
Grease goes down the drain warm and liquid, then cools and sticks to the pipe. Over time it hardens into a thick layer that traps food, soap and debris. A cable might open a small channel through it, but hydro jetting washes the grease off the walls so the line drains freely again.
Tree Roots
Roots that work their way into a sewer line form a thick mat that catches everything. Jetting cuts through roots and flushes the pieces out. If roots keep coming back, the pipe likely has a crack or open joint, and a sewer camera inspection will show where. From there we can talk about sewer line repair so you’re not jetting the same roots every year.
Is Hydro Jetting Safe for My Pipes?
For pipes in good shape, yes. Jetting is gentle on sound pipe and tough on buildup. On a line that’s badly cracked, collapsed or rusted thin, high pressure can make a weak spot worse, so we check before we jet. That usually means running a camera first, especially in older Sacramento homes with clay or cast-iron sewer lines.
If the camera shows a damaged line, we’ll tell you, lay out your options and let you choose. We never jet blind into a pipe we haven’t checked.
