Signs Your Home Needs Repiping
Repiping is one of the jobs we like doing most, because it ends a cycle of leaks for good. These are the signs it may be time:
- More than one leak in the past year or two
- Rusty, brown or yellow water, especially first thing in the morning
- Water pressure that has faded slowly over time
- Pipes you can see that are gray plastic, or rough and corroded metal
- Hot water that runs out quickly or comes out with flakes in it
- A home inspection report that flags the piping
Galvanized Pipe in Older Sacramento Homes
Many homes built in the 1950s through the 1970s in older Sacramento neighborhoods were plumbed with galvanized steel. It rusts from the inside, which narrows the pipe, lowers pressure and eventually leads to leaks at the threads. Once galvanized starts failing, it rarely stops at one spot.
Polybutylene Pipe
Polybutylene is a gray plastic pipe that was used in many homes from the late 1970s into the 1990s. It can grow brittle and crack from the inside without warning. If your home has it, replacing it before it fails is the safer choice.
Whole-House, Partial and Commercial Repipes
Every repipe starts with a look at what you have. We check the pipe, the water pressure and the layout, then recommend only what the house needs.
Whole-House Repiping
A whole-house repipe replaces every water supply line from the main shut-off to each fixture. It’s the right fit when the original pipe is failing throughout. If the service line from the meter is also old, we can replace it in the same project through our water line repair service.
Partial Repiping
Sometimes only part of the house is the problem, such as one bathroom group, a kitchen line or a run that keeps leaking under the slab. A partial repipe fixes that section without the cost of the whole house. If you’re not sure where water is escaping, we start with leak detection.
Commercial Repiping
We also repipe offices, shops, restaurants and multi-family buildings. We plan the work around your hours and tenants to keep shutdowns short. Learn more about our commercial plumbing services.
PEX or Copper: Choosing Your Repiping Material
Both PEX and copper are proven choices. We explain the trade-offs and let you decide.
PEX
PEX is a flexible plastic pipe that bends around framing, so it needs fewer fittings and usually fewer wall openings. It resists corrosion and handles freezing better than rigid pipe. For most whole-house repipes, it’s the most cost-effective option.
Copper
Copper has a long track record and is a good choice where pipe will be exposed or where you simply prefer it. It costs more in material and labor, but many homeowners like its durability and look.
Pipe Insulation
While the walls are open, we can insulate hot water lines to keep heat in and cold lines in attics or exterior walls to prevent sweating and protect against cold snaps. In a Sacramento summer, insulating lines that run through a hot attic also helps your cold water stay cold.
