What Is a Heat Pump Water Heater?
A heat pump water heater works like a refrigerator in reverse. A small compressor on top of the tank pulls warmth from the surrounding air and moves it into the water. Most models also have a backup electric element for times of heavy use, which is why you’ll also hear them called hybrid water heaters.
Our climate suits them well. Sacramento’s long, hot summers keep garages warm, and a heat pump unit runs most efficiently in warm air. As a bonus, it blows cool, dry air out as it works, which many homeowners notice in a hot garage.
Heat Pump vs. Other Water Heaters
Compared with a standard electric tank, a heat pump model uses far less energy to heat the same water. It costs more up front, and it recovers more slowly after heavy use. If you’re comparing gas options too, see our pages on tank water heaters and tankless water heaters.
California Rebates for Heat Pump Water Heaters
California utilities, local agencies and state programs have offered rebates and incentives for heat pump water heaters. These programs change often. Amounts, eligibility and paperwork rules shift from year to year, and some depend on who provides your electricity.
Before you buy, check what’s available for your address. We’re happy to talk through the equipment and install details a program may ask about, and we’ll give you a clear, itemized estimate you can use when you apply. We won’t promise a rebate we can’t confirm.
Heat Pump Water Heater Installation and Replacement
Heat pump units have a few needs a standard tank doesn’t. We check all of them during the free on-site estimate:
- Space and airflow: they need room around the unit to pull in air
- A dedicated electrical circuit, often 240 volts
- A condensate drain line for the water the unit pulls from the air
- Clearance on top for the heat pump section
- Earthquake strapping and a relief line, the same as any California water heater
Switching From Gas
Many of our heat pump installs replace an old gas tank. We set the new unit, run the plumbing and condensate lines, and safely cap the old gas connection. If you’re keeping other gas appliances, we can check that line too with our gas line services. If the circuit or panel needs work, we’ll tell you up front so you can bring in an electrician.
Is a Heat Pump Water Heater Right for Your Home?
It’s a good fit if you have a garage or large utility space, your household uses a steady amount of hot water and you want lower energy use over time. It may not be the best pick in a small closet with no airflow, or if the electrical work would cost more than the savings make sense for.
We’ll give you an honest answer. Most new installs carry a one-year warranty on leaks and labor, you can qualify for financing right from your estimate, and our coupons can take money off your first service.
