What Is Trenchless Sewer Repair?
Traditional sewer replacement means digging a trench along the full length of the pipe. That can mean tearing out lawn, concrete, fences and anything else in the way, then putting it all back.
Trenchless methods work from one or two small pits, usually at each end of the line. The new pipe goes in underground, following the path of the old one. Less digging means less mess, and the yard you’ve worked on stays mostly the way it was.
Pipe Bursting
Pipe bursting replaces your old sewer line with a brand-new one. We pull a cone-shaped bursting head through the old pipe. As it moves, it breaks the old pipe apart and pushes the pieces into the surrounding soil, while a new, continuous pipe is pulled in right behind it.
Pipe bursting works well for clay, cast iron and other old pipe that’s cracked, broken or full of roots. Because it installs a whole new line, it can sometimes go up a pipe size, which helps a line that’s been too small for the house.
Pipe Lining (CIPP)
Pipe lining, also called cured-in-place pipe or CIPP, builds a new pipe inside your old one. After the line is cleaned, usually with hydro jetting, we pull a flexible liner soaked in resin into the pipe and inflate it against the walls. The resin hardens into a smooth, strong pipe within a pipe.
Lining is a good fit when the old pipe still holds its shape but has cracks, small holes, root entry points or leaking joints. It’s especially useful for lines under a slab or a driveway, where digging is hardest.
When Trenchless Sewer Repair Works
Trenchless isn’t right for every line, and we won’t push it when it isn’t. We start with a sewer camera inspection to see the pipe’s condition, material, depth and layout. When a line is fully collapsed or has a deep sag, a traditional repair on that section may be the better choice, and we’ll say so.
Trenchless usually works when:
- The line is cracked, leaking or full of roots but still has a path through it
- The pipe runs under a driveway, patio, slab or mature trees
- There’s room at each end for a small access pit
- There’s no fully collapsed section blocking the path
