Signs Your Garbage Disposal Needs Repair
Most disposal problems fall into a few patterns. Call us if you notice any of these:
- A humming sound, but the blades won’t spin
- No sound at all when you flip the switch
- Water leaking from the bottom or sides of the unit
- The reset button trips over and over
- Slow draining or water backing up into the other sink
- A smell that won’t go away after cleaning
Garbage Disposal Repair
Jams and Humming
A humming disposal is usually jammed. A bone, fruit pit or piece of silverware wedged between the plate and the ring stops it cold. We free the jam, check the motor and reset the unit. Never put your hand inside a disposal to clear it, even with the power off at the switch.
Leaks
Leaks from the sink flange, the dishwasher connection or the drain pipe can usually be fixed by resealing or replacing a gasket. A leak from the body of the unit usually means the inside seals have failed, and replacement is the better choice.
Clogs and Slow Drains
Grease, coffee grounds and fibrous scraps like celery and onion skins pack into the trap and drain line. We clear the disposal and the line behind it. If the clog is further down, our drain cleaning service reaches it.
Garbage Disposal Installation and Replacement
When a disposal is old, rusted inside or leaking from the body, a new one usually costs less over time than another repair. We remove the old unit, install the new one, connect the dishwasher drain if you have one, and run water to test for leaks and proper draining.
We help you choose the right size for how you cook. A larger motor handles tougher scraps and jams less often. If you’re also replacing a faucet or dishwasher hookup, we can do it all in one visit.
Disposals and Septic Systems
If your home is on septic, a disposal sends extra food solids into the tank, so it fills faster and may need more frequent septic tank pumping. That’s common in rural areas like Wilton, Clarksburg and parts of Galt. We’ll talk through whether a disposal makes sense for your system.
Keeping Your Disposal Running
A few habits help a disposal last:
- Run cold water before, during and after grinding
- Keep grease, oil and coffee grounds out
- Avoid bones, fruit pits and fibrous scraps
- Grind ice or citrus peels now and then to help clean the blades
